Scripture: Deuteronomy 21:22-23 “And if a man has committed a crime punishable by death and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, his body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you shall bury him the same day, for a hanged man is cursed by God.”
Observations: Galatians 3 is an explanation of Righteousness by Faith rather than by law or works. Deuteronomy 19 shares rules for protecting the innocent, Chapter 20 concerns how the Israelites were to handle war. Chapter 21 was about unsolved murders, female captives, rights of the firstborn and rebellious children. Application: This scripture just bothered me when I read it. Jesus committed no crime. It was not his fault the leaders of the day were jealous of him. He did not deserve to be hung from a tree, yet that was the punishment the people, who had a week prior to this, been praising him, insisted he receive (for doing nothing wrong). Our sins were atoned for because sin took Jesus to the cross. That is just mind boggling to me. How deep the love of our Father! Prayer: Dear God, thank you. Where would I be without you? You are gracious and merciful, and my heart is broken over what we did to Jesus. Thank you for loving us so much that you would go through the pain of watching your innocent son suffer for us. Thank you for forgiveness. Next Reading: Deuteronomy 22-24; Galatians 4 |
