Death brings on death

Scripture:  Leviticus 20:2-4 “Say to the people of Israel, Anyone of the people of Israel or of the strangers who sojourn in Israel who gives any of his children to Molech shall surely be put to death.  The people of the land shall stone him with stones.  I myself will set my face against that man and will cut him off from among his people, because he has given one of his children to Molech, to make my sanctuary unclean and to profane my holy name.  And if the people of the land do at all close their eyes to that man when he gives one of his children to Molech, and do not put him to death, then I will set my face against that man and against his clan and will cut them off from among their people, him and all who follow him in whoring after Molech.”

Observations:  Leviticus talked about sexual sin.  I didn’t realize that uncovering the father’s nakedness actually means having sex with his wife.  Now the story of Noah’s son makes more sense to me.  So much of this chapter is talking about sexual relations that truly shouldn’t be.  There is a discussion on staying away from mediums and necromancers.  I did have to look that one up.  It is a magician or a wizard. Mediums and necromancers were to be stoned to death.  There is a discussion about priests.  They were to be holy.  Peter tells us that we are all priests, which means we all should be holy.   In Acts, a young man fell from a second story window to his death (Paul spoke too long), but Paul was able to miraculously revive him. Then Paul headed out on his last leg of his missionary journeys, knowing that God was going to use him in chains and that he was going to lose his life.

Application.  I’m going to sound political here, but reading this truly upset me because I just heard recently that many believe that aborting babies is similar to sacrificing children to Molech.  Molech statues were part man and part beast, and when a child was brought to be sacrificed, fire would be lit to consume the child and there would be a loud celebration to drown out the screams of the child.  I thought about how when New York got their bill passed for late term abortions, they had loud celebrations in the street.  It just seems to me we opened up the door for sacrifice.  The reason people used to sacrifice babies to Molech was so their future would be more prosperous.  The reason people are aborting babies is because of their careers, or because they had the baby with someone they didn’t want to spend their lives with.  Sounds similar to me.

Prayer:  Father, we do plead that you protect the lives of the unborn child.  I pray that your law of sexual purity outside the bonds of matrimony will be honored.  I pray that you watch over those on the front-lines peacefully battling for the closure of abortion clinics.  Let those who are battling for governmental positions align their politics with your Word.  I pray all this in Christ Jesus’ name.

Tomorrow’s Reading:  Leviticus 23-24; Psalm 24; Acts 21
